Progress Report

The Carolina is a very active theatre and organ maintenance access is limited to times when the theatre is dark.

The rebuild contract was signed in the fall of 1998 and work began immediately to check out the original six ranks for damage, remove the the Wurlitzer relay that had been installed in the last rebuild (small RM Consoles were unified under the keys!!) and order a Uniflex 2000 system. The wind trunk from the main to the solo had been damaged where it crossed over the proscenium arch. It had been repaired by the theatre but additional damage had been found in the solo chamber. The wind line was removed, resoldered and reinstalled.

Upon receipt of the Uniflex hardware and software, the following tasks were completed.

  • The original cable was removed form all chests and offsets.
  • A new conduit was run under the stage apron to carry the 26 conductor flat cable, power control wiring, audio cable and  tuning wand signal cable.
  • New cable was attached to all chests and offsets and connected to the Uniflex Output Boards in the Solo and Main chambers
  • A Uniflex PC was borrowed from the Williams High School Organ, the Morton 6 ranks were winded and the organ was played from the PC.
  • The tuning wands were installed and the organ was tuned.

Exercising the Morton from the PC found some more problems in the  chest work and shutters caused by water damage. Additional damage was discovered while tuning the Tibia. Several 2’ pipes had been damaged. This concluded Phase 1a work as well as part of the Phase 1b work . Phase 1a completion was reported by playing the Morton for the Carolina management.

Upon receipt of the next check in late December of 1999, The PC for the Uniflex 2000 System and the  MIDI Tone Generators and the Audio Power Amplifiers for the MIDI digital Sample playback system were ordered.  They were installed in March of 2000 and the organ is now playing with the following

Regulation of the digital samples cannot be completed until the console is installed.

Continued investigation goes on concerning winding of the Solo chamber. There is some indication that the wind line over the proscenium is leaking.

The Organ is now played regularly from the PC for the Carolina Movie series. There seems to be a good bit of interest from the patrons as well as the theatre technical staff.

7/23-24/2000
Additional damage was found to the wind line above the Solo chamber. Several of the elbows were found to have been sprung while air conditioning was being updated. Unfortunately, the crew had to traverse the length of the air line across the proscenium to check out the whole line. There is no cat walk above the proscenium and it was necessary to cross using the dome supports. :~((. In addition, repairs were made to the Main swell shutters . The repairs required dropping the pneumatic box to repair a primary pneumatic.

Funding from the Carolina for this portion of the installation was received on March 5, 2002. The funds were immediately turned around to order SAMs and Stop Tabs.  This “Smith style” console was installed on a “Geneva” theatre organ and started its life in Chicago area theatre. It was given to PTOS by Mr. Jay Burns of Melbourne, FL. It has been rebuilt and painted. The console color reflects the color of the Carolina drapery

This picture shows the upper and lower stop rail installed. The back rail and the Uniflex I/O Boards are targeted to be installed by the end of the month. In the mean time, the keyboards are being rebuilt  with a target date of the end of August. If everything goes as planned, the console should be playing by the beginning of September

All three manuals have been refurbished and adjusted.  After 15 years of silence theorgan is playable from the console. We can now do some voicing and start getting ready for the 75th anniverary and opening of the organ. More to come
